Rare Spider Halts Texas Road Construction

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A $15 million San Antonio highway underpass project under construction since spring will have to be scrapped and completely redesigned after a rare spider was found on the construction site.

The Braken Bat Cave meshweaver was found about a month ago at the Texas 151-Loop 1604 intersection in northwestern San Antonio. The spider is listed on the federal endangered species list and was found after rain exposed a 6-feet-deep natural hole on a median.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Josh Donat says the state, after consulting with federal wildlife and transportation officials, has scrapped the idea of an underpass. He says the contractor has been released and an overpass design will be needed to avoid disturbing the habitat.

The new design will need federal approval since the habitat is protected.

Most people hate spiders, but one man’s fear of spiders got him into some real heat. It happened at a gas station in the Detroit area.

A man pulled into the gas station, and while filling up his tank noticed a spider on his car. So what did he do? He pulled out a lighter and tried to burn the spider.

A fireball bursts from the gas tank and spreads to the pump. The man later apologized…saying he’s deathly afraid of spiders.

Scientists “Miserable” After World’s Oldest Spider Dies At 43

AUSTRALIA (CBS Local) – The world’s oldest known spider has died in Western Australia at the age of 43. The record-breaking arachnid was 15 years older than any other spider scientists have found.

The Details:

  • World’s oldest spider, dubbed “Number 16,” has died at 43
  • Female Giaus Villosus, better known as a trapdoor spider, succumbed to wasp sting
  • Trapdoor spiders commonly seen in Australia, typically live 5-20 years
  • By remaining in same burrow from birth, female trapdoor spiders use little energy
  • Previous record lifespan owned by 28-year-old tarantula in Mexico

According to a report in Pacific Conservation Biology, the ancient trapdoor spider was killed by a wasp sting in the country’s Central Wheatbelt region recently. The female arachnid, known as “Number 16,” was discovered by Barbara York Main in 1974 and eventually outlived a 28-year-old tarantula in Mexico – the former oldest spider.

“To our knowledge this is the oldest spider ever recorded and her significant life has allowed us to further investigate the trapdoor spider’s behavior and popular dynamics,” the spider study’s current lead author Leanda Mason told The Telegraph. “We’re really miserable about it. We were hoping she could have made it to 50 years old.”

The spider likely managed to live for so long by staying in the same burrow its entire life, allowing it to use little energy over the years.

The trapdoor spider is a common sight in Australia and reportedly lives between five and 20 years. Females like Number 16 reportedly live out most of their lives in the same burrow hole. Males are more likely to be seen by humans as they leave their burrow in search of a mate.

The Australian researchers added in their report that the remarkably long life of Number 16 could actually “provide lessons for humanity and sustainable living.”

Man Finds ‘Giant Beast’ Spider That Walks On Water

ELKHART, IN (CBS Local) – An Indiana boat builder found a very scary-looking guest checking out his work recently: a giant six-inch spider that can apparently walk on water.

Jacob Collins shared images of the creepy encounter on Facebook and warned fellow Elkhart residents that “they are out there and they are real.”

The spider, which has already been shared more than 10,000 times on Facebook, is reportedly a fishing spider. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources tells WTTV that the creatures may be terrifying in appearance, but are relatively harmless.

Employees at Godfrey Marine boat factory ran into the eight-legged terror because of the spider’s ability to walk on water. Experts say the arachnid’s three-inch legs use the surface tension of water to stay afloat.

Collins says the “giant beast” was released back into the wild after visiting the boat. The boat worker also warned his fellow Indiana residents to “beware,” that odd-shaped object in the water may actually be a giant creepy crawler.

FULSHEAR, TX (CBSDFW.COM) – Dashcam footage from a town near Houston last week shows a surprising and spooky sight.

A spider crawled across the windshield of a squad car and the perspective of the video makes it look gigantic. It also made is look like the arthropod was stalking the officer as he conducted a traffic stop. The creature seems to creep behind the officer from the left side of the clip, advancing across the street in stages behind the officer’s back.

A clerk with the Fulshear Police Department spotted the creepy crawler while reviewing the incident.

The department posted the freaky video on its Facebook page, asking “Who needs Hollywood special effects? This little guy was positioned perfectly on the windshield of the patrol car and gave our clerk, who was reviewing the video, quite the Halloween scare.”
